Lend a hand, be a Santa’s helper and sort toys.

Filed under: Christmas, Upcoming Events — Tags: — jrcls @ 7:08 pm

Hello fellow members!!!

Last year, the J. Reuben Clark Law Society took the opportunity to help the City of Concord with some Christmas shopping for some local needy children. This year, they do not need us to do child-specific shopping, but the city has received a ton of toys to be given to the less fortunate at Christmas and the toys need to be sorted. If anyone is interested in helping to sort the toys and has an hour (or more if desired) to donate next week, please feel free to do so. We realize this falls in the middle of finals, but everyone takes a break now and then, and there is no greater blessing then helping out those less fortunate than you.

Some of us will be going up there on either Monday or Tuesday (12/10 or 12/11) for about an hour, so if anyone wants to come with us, please let us know and we’ll carpool. If you do not have time to come with us but would still like to help, please call the contact person, Jackie; tell her you are with the law school groups that are helping with the toy sorting and ask her if there are still more toys to be sorted. (She may have other simple projects to help out with if the sorting has been finished before you get a chance to go.) The phone number to reach her is: 225-8575 and the hours of the location are 8:00 – 4:30. The address of the place is 247 Pleasant St., so it is right up the street from the school – a perfect break. Thank you all for all of your help and support so far this year! We really appreciate it!

Halo 2 Roundup

Summing it up

Halo Night Pierce made a great showing in the JRCLS’ 1st annual video game fundraiser event. First and foremost, we were able to raise a good chunk of change for the Franklin Pierce Law Center Civil Practice Clinic. Second, we were able to deduce who the masters of halo 2 are among the Pierce student body. A strong front of teenage attendees gave the Pierce crowd a run for their money and ultimately the end result was split. The top team in the competition was entirely comprised of Pierce folk, while the top player was a local. Please leave us comments on what we can improve on for next year. Competition Rules

Filed under: Halo Fundraiser Competition Rules — jrcls @ 11:19 pm

NOTE: The only way to get into the individual competition is by playing in the team competition. If you don’t want to compete, there will be a few free play rooms, where you can go to learn or just have fun.

Team Competition: Up to four people per team. This means that you can be a one man team, but you pay the team price – $25. If you want to be on a team, but don’t know anyone else, we can try to help. Just let us know. Each game should have 4 teams and each team gets randomly put into one of the school rooms with a projector. The competition will start with a round robin arrangement – all teams will compete against all other teams at least once. Based on team stats, each team is then sorted into a bracket slot. The top two teams in each bracket move into a winners bracket and the bottom two teams move to a losers bracket. There is a double elimination for the teams. The top team of the last bracket (the top four teams) wins the Franklin Pierce Halo Champion T-shirts.

Individual competition: In order to play in the individual competition, you must compete on a team – whether or not you play by yourself on that team. The top 16 players with the best kill to death ratio per game from the team competition will be selected for the individual competition. The top16 then play several varied matches and the top player wins a copy of Halo 3. The maps and variations of game play have not yet been decided.

***All posted rules are subject to change. (Though, this is pretty much how it’s gonna be!!!)

Faculty – Details for signing up your children

Filed under: Faculty Info — jrcls @ 9:19 pm

FACULTY MEMBERS:

– We are all very excited to have your children be allowed to participate in the fundraiser!

– As always, there are some limitations, of which you need to be aware. First of all, your child must be at least 14 years old* to participate.  As recently modified, your child may invite his or her friends (no more than three) to participate on a team with him or her.  Additionally, if the number of total participants becomes too large to accommodate, we reserve the right to terminate the sign-up process (so sign up early!)

– As you may be aware, there is a limit of four people per Xbox and although a one-man-team is allowed, if your child/children wants to play on a team, there are others who may not have formed a team yet, so we will do our best to put them on a  team if they have not brought teammates with them.  To this end, if your child/children are interested in playing, please encourage them to get on a team with other children ahead of time and they can share the cost of the team sign-up. Also, each room will be monitored by a member of our organization to handle any problems that may arise.

– In case your child/children want to know more about how the tournament will be run, we will have a link posted shortly with instructions about the gameplay. Briefly – there will be a team competition and an individual competition. In order to get a spot in the individual competition, the participant must compete in the team competition, (with or without team members). Click here for more details…

– Lastly, if your 14 and older children don’t want to compete, but do want to play, there will be some free-play rooms for them play in, the entrance fee is $7/person – be aware though that space in the free play rooms may be limited.

For further questions, contact: Richard Allen (rallen@piercelaw.edu), Michel Bohn (mbohn@piercelaw.edu), Tony Palizzi (tpalizzi@piercelaw.edu), or Brian Riddle (briddle@piercelaw.edu)

*Please be advised that the game, Halo 2, has a game rating for ages 17+. The J. Reuben Clark Law Society and members thereof will not be held responsible for any concerns that arise, with respect to this age rating, regarding those that participate.

Raindancing

Filed under: Past Events — Tags: — jrcls @ 9:26 pm

Today’s event was a success.  JRCLS presented a video presentation about how to bring home the bacon, that is, how to effectively network and pull in clients for your firm.  In short, Atkin presented 3 core fundamentals that every attorney should have in his or her briefcase.

  1. You are a long ways from the market if you do not have anything to sell.
    1. What is your specialty  Establish the area of law in which you wish to specialize.  Take every opportunity to gain expertise in this area.
    2. Who are you prospective clients who are interested in your services?
    3. Where do your clients gather?
    4. Understand how your clients think?  Learn to think like your clients and act accordingly.
    5. Differentiate yourself from your competitor.  Quality, substance, knowledge, visibility, support of clients.
  2. The bees that make the honey, do not hang around the hive.
    1. Developing your business requires hard work.  “Just plain making the effort is the hardest part.”
    2. Play to your strengths.  If you present well, develop presentational materials, etc.
  3. The fear of failure is fatal to success.
    1. Start developing a business plan now to begin your career.
    2. Make a distinct effort to build lasting relationships with prospective clients, even though it may initially require you to make the first contact.

He also emphasized three focus areas for effective rainmaking:

  1. Relationship Building.  Think of innovative ways to connect with those who you meet.  Don’t pass up opportunities to meet people and get to know them.  You never know where they will lead.
  2. Reputation Building.  Get involved in trade groups and associations.  Focus on your specialty and publish it widely.
  3. Client Development / Retention.  Once you have them, keep them.  Don’t nickel and dime your clients.  Don’t hesitate to offer “free” advice from time to time as it will likely eventually draw more business your way.

If you are interested in obtaining the presentation, we can lend it to you.  Just email jrcls@piercelaw.edu.
